Schisandra chinensis is called magnolia berry and five-flavor fruit. Traditional Chinese Medicine considers it one of the 50 basic herbs, with salty, sweet, sour, pungent, and bitter qualities. A deciduous woody vine endemic to northern China and eastern Russia produces schisandra berries, which are used to make juices, wines, extracts, and sweets. Schisandra berries can be marinated, tinctured, or brewed into tea.
